El estudio de la personalidad comienza con cuatro humores de hipocrates y dio lugar a cuatro temperamentos la explicacion fue perfeccionada por su sucesor Galen durante el siglo II. La teoria de los cuatro humores sustuvo que una personalidad personal se basa en el equilibrio de los humores corporales la bilis amarilla marcondolos irracible. Los altos niveles de vilis negro era indicativo de la melancolia y el pesimismo.
